COVINGTON, Ky. – The City of Covington is celebrating the recognition of Susan Ellis as the Kentucky Municipal Clerks Association’s (KMCA) Clerk of the Year for 2024. Susan Ellis, the City Clerk of Covington, was honored with this prestigious award at KMCA’s annual Spring Conference in Jamestown, Ky., on April 18.

City Manager Ken Smith expressed the city's delight, stating, “The City is extremely pleased by KMCA recognizing Susan as the Kentucky City Clerk of the Year.” Susan Ellis, in response to the honor, expressed her overwhelming feelings, saying, “I have always strived to be the best that I can be with whatever I have been involved with. I love what I do and am so happy to have landed in a place where I could soar. This was something I never imagined, and it is so wonderful to be recognized for what I do. There are so many amazing clerks who have earned this honor before me. I am so proud to be able to bring this award home to Covington.”

Covington Mayor Joe Meyer commended Ellis, highlighting her work ethic and professionalism, saying, “Susan has great pride in her work, she is self-motivated, and performs her roles with a reliability and professionalism that are wonderful examples for all others in the role of clerk.” Finance Director Steve Webb also praised Ellis, stating, “Susan adds more value to the City clerk position than I have ever experienced in nearly 15 years of public sector service.”

Reflecting on the surprise of receiving the award, Ellis mentioned the efforts of her husband in keeping it a secret, stating, “My husband did a fantastic job keeping this a secret. Apparently, he has known for weeks. While I picked up on some clues, none of which came from him, nothing was certain and I still did not know ahead of time that I’d been chosen. I was truly surprised. Other nominees were also so deserving.”

Susan Ellis, who has been serving as the City Clerk of Covington since 2021, has not only received the KMCA Clerk of the Year honor but has also earned the Kentucky Master Municipal Clerk designation and the International Institute for Municipal Clerks (IIMC) Master Municipal Clerk Designation. She is currently in her second year as director of the Northern Kentucky Municipal Clerks Association.
